Double-Handle
Burnisher
$250
When
a flute is taken apart and reassembled many times, the tenons tend to loosen.
Over time the slippage grows dangerous, to where the foot joint could fall
off in use. Tools to expand the tenon are available, but most are very aggressive
and do not expand the tubing evenly enough or gradually enough. Many even
leave deep marks in the tubing. We prefer the double handle burnisher for
this task; with the flute mounted on a mandrel, one can press hard with both
hands while rubbing the tool back and forth over the tenon. In this manner
the tubing progressively thins around the circumference of the tenon, thus
proportionally expanding the outside diameter to the proper size. The job
may take longer with this tool, but your tenons will be consistent in diameter.
NB: A well-fitted mandrel inside the tube is absolutely mandatory for this
job.
