Perhaps unsurprisingly, Landell #1 was commissioned by none other than Bennett himself, who performed on the flute for many years.

As a postscript, we would recommend keeping a watch on our Research page for announcements regarding the scale used on our instruments. By the year 2005 we will have some exciting news to share on a unique advancement on Cooper's work that is not public information at this time.
Cooper-Bennett Scale
In 1972, a year before the official launch of his company, Jonathon Landell traveled to London for a meeting with two legendary figures. The flutemaker Albert Cooper, at that time unknown in the United States, was working closely with the English flutist William Bennett to develop a revelutionary new scale for the modern flute.
After intensive consultation
with both Cooper and Bennett, Jonathon returned to the States carrying with
him the precious schematics and calculations that are today known as the Cooper-Bennett
Scale.
Landell flute serial #1 was not only the first flute produced by the company;
it was also the first instrument to be built in the United States utilizing
Cooper's geometry.

Today, the Cooper-Bennett scale is the rule in the flute design world, rather than the exception.
With only minor modifications, we continue to faithfully use Cooper's model, and are proud of the history that brought it over the Atlantic to our own country.
