This very sensitive meter is built with incredible accuracy to measure the slightest air leak inside any wind instrument. A small low pressure air pump (less than .5 psi) gives a comparable amount of air pressure as that within the instrument, while a gauge measures the performance of the pad seals. The technician attaches the flexible hose to one end of the body and stops the other end with a rubber stopper, and closes all the keys with normal playing pressure. Any amount of air leakage will show up on the large meter and the amount of air flow can be measured with the floating ball indicator.

By changing the amount of finger pressure on certain keys, the technician can tell immediately where the offending pads or connections are not sealing perfectly and spend more time with those leaks. Also, if a customer brings an instrument to the shop for evaluation, they can see immediately how the pads are performing with an accurate measurement of air leakage, making the Magenhelic and effective sales tool as well as valuable reference instrument.
