General Class Information
To teach others the art & science of flute repair, we offer a series of courses that grow progressively more involved and professionally oriented. Our short Tune-Up class, available in a self-study booklet format, is a good basic education in the maintainance and adjustment a flute. The full-fledged apprentice training classes take place at our workshop, and are all 5 workdays in length. Keep reading for more info.
Most flutists are afraid to do any meachanical work on their flute, because they don't have the tools or training to do it right. So, The Landell Flute Tune-Up Manual was written as the first step toward learning flute maintenance. With the Flute Tune-Up Tool Kit anyone with moderate mechanical skill can take their flute apart, oil it and put everything back together. Still afraid to do it alone? OK, you can simply make an appointment to come to the workshop and do the class with expert supervision. Ordering the tool kit will give you everything you need for the job. Try it out on your old flute first!

The
Padding class, first of the four major workshop/seminars, teaches such skills
as disassembly, pad replacement, reskinning, shimming, connection adjustment,
backlash adjustment, and reassembly (yes, you must put it back together!)
After this weeklong repair session, you will be capable of repadding a professional-model
flute and tuning its action to work perfectly. ::Information
The
Overhaul & Mechanical class introduces techniques to address complex
issues like mechanical wear and tear. Moving beyond pads, students repair
such perplexing problems as key wear, body dents, worn pivots, and binding
key tubes. This workshop is highly flexible, and depending on interest,
apprentices spend time making hand tools, learning the business of professional
flute repair, or like the father-son team on the left, practicing their
polishing technique. ::Information
The
Head Joint class is a remarkable workshop on the intruiging and delicate
art of head joint design. Each student builds their own head from start
to finish in this class, after learning the artful yet simple geometries
behind the best professional headjoints. This class is less intense than
the first two, but requires previous experience with hand tools.
As a bonus, every apprentice has their head joint hand-engraved with any
logo of their design. ::Information
The
final and most advanced class we offer is essentially a launchpad into a
professional career in flutemaking. It is not for the hobbyist, and we require
every apprentice who takes our Build Your Own Flute class to satisfactorily
complete the first three prior to enrolling. Despite the challenges, the
results are incredibly rewarding: a custom flute built entirely with your
own hands.
Typical completion
time: 6 months
